Great Horned Owl Chicks

Great Horned Owl Chicks

While walking my dog today at Lake Forest Open Lands I discovered a Great Horned Owl nest with two fledglings. This is a photo from http://www.google.com/images but they were about the same stage of life as these shown in this photo. The adults breed in late December to January around here, that’s when you hear their calls in the early evening. I’m going to head back whenever I can over the next few weeks as they are completely visible from a walking trail. They will be gone soon, this species chooses to breed in the depth of winter in order to time the chicks leaving the nest with nature’s first abundance of food in late spring. I will be bringing binoculars so that I can stay far enough away to respect their boundaries. Adults can and will attack if you get too close! Information on Open Lands can be found at http://www.lfola.org/
